New for Summer 2017, the Bear & Billet is now open for breakfast! Whether you choose a hearty Full English, Crumpets & Smoked Salmon or a simple Porridge, start your day off right with us.

Built in 1664 to replace a building destroyed in the Civil War, the Bear & Billet is one of Chester’s finest examples of a black and white half-timbered building. Located just within the City’s Walls, the pub has seen many a visitor as it’s loved by both the locals and tourists.

It is said that the Earls of Shrewsbury had leased it to an innkeeper on condition that a suite of rooms was always kept available for the Earl and his family. A drawing of 1820 shows it as the Bridgegate Tavern and it is believed to have acquired its present name soon after.

Still containing its original fixtures, The Bear & Billet has subtle hints to its’ varied past (including the resident ghosts). Originally the town house of the Earls of Shrewsbury, the pub is also the birthplace of Beatles’ legend John Lennon’s grandmother.

Spread out over 3 spacious floors, the Bear & Billet offers a fantastic opportunity to hire the historic venue for your very own private function. With fabulous views of the City’s walls, the spacious top two floors offers the right amount of privacy whilst still enjoying the pub atmosphere. The fantastic location and exquisite range of beverages & food paired with the friendly team ensures that every event, no matter what the size, is memorable for all the right reasons.
